Have Smartphones Become a Daily Necessity?

The fact that we live in the digital era is one that is widely known, but how much of our lives do we spend in front of our mobile devices? Well, according to some studies, we spend roughly almost five hours looking at the square screen in our hands. Shocked? At first, I was, too. Then I remembered that I woke up this morning to the ringing of my alarm clock, ate breakfast while watching videos on Youtube, and now writing this while listening to music on Spotify – all on my smartphone. Now, that number seems about right. What do we do in those five hours, though?

1. Communication

Mobile phones were originally crafted for communication purposes, so it’s only fitting that we use them to contact people. A decade ago, that function was limited to little more than making calls and sending text messages. Now, though, our smartphones are capable of so much more (hence the smart part of the word): sending emails, making video calls, etc. The wide variety of mobile apps available is making communication much easier as they can cater to our specific communication needs.

2. Social media

Of course, how can we not talk about social media when we talk about smartphones? Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are just some of the most popular mobile apps used by the majority of smartphone users in the world today. Did you know that the average American checks their phones around 150 times a day? There’s something about social media that makes us feel the need to share with and be connected to people constantly. Maybe it’s human nature! We are social beings, after all.

3. Entertainment

Gone are the days when we catch ourselves bored while waiting for our doctor’s appointment or flights. In our hands are devices that contain literally all digital information accessible via the Internet. Watch videos on Youtube! Read books on Kindle! Listen to podcasts on iTunes! Play online games with friends or even strangers! With these mobile apps on our smartphones, we never need to know what boredom feels like anymore.

4. Work

Especially beneficial for freelancers, there are plenty of mobile apps on our smartphones that we can utilize for work purposes: data gathering for articles, setting reminders for deadlines or sending emails, sketching the first draft of an illustration, or even recording the first sounds of your newest music. With the latest mobile phones, we can even take professional-grade photos! The handiness of the 5-inch gadget in our pockets makes it easier to store ideas and help materialize them into something new. How cool is that?

5. Cashless

I used to worry a lot when I forgot to bring my wallet when I went out. Now? With Venmo and similar financial mobile apps, the possibility to pay for products or services with just a few taps on my smartphone has eliminated that worry. Not only that, but it has also helped me with my financial planning. Budgeting is seamless thanks to the easily accessible records.

The wide function of our smartphones made possible by the mobile apps has made them an important necessity in our daily lives. With the handheld gadget, we can contact people easily and connect with them via calls, texts, and social media. Entertainment is also readily available anytime we want. We can also rely on our smartphones when we need to hustle or make financial transactions. With these many benefits, there is no wonder that smartphones have become a huge part of our daily lives.
